Football betting rules at Mela Bet

These Mela Bet football betting rules explain how football bets are settled, including the treatment of extra time, penalties, interrupted matches and live events. Bet settlement means deciding whether an accepted bet is won, lost or void under the applicable rules. A void bet is cancelled for settlement purposes, with the stake returned for a single bet; multiple bets follow their separate rules.

Before placing a bet, check the market name, the period covered, the match status and any special conditions in the bet slip. Specific market conditions take priority over this general explanation, subject to the applicable Terms and Conditions. Mela Bet aims to settle football bets according to published market rules and official event data. This guide is intended for adults checking football betting rules in Ethiopia.

Standard settlement time: 90 minutes

For most football markets, settlement is based on 90 minutes of play plus referee-added stoppage time. Stoppage time, also called added time, is included; extra time and penalty shootouts are not included unless the market explicitly says otherwise. Extra time is a separate period played after normal time in some knockout matches.

The following markets normally cover 90 minutes plus stoppage time:

  • Match Result / 1X2: home win, draw or away win.
  • Double Chance: two of the three possible match results.
  • Total Goals: whether the number of goals is over or under a stated line.
  • Handicap: the result after applying the specified goal adjustment.
  • Both Teams to Score: whether each team scores during the covered period.

Do not assume that “full time” means the result after extra time. Check the market definition. First-half, second-half and other period markets cover only their stated periods.

When extra time counts

Extra time counts only where the market rules include it. Look for wording such as “including extra time”, “To Qualify”, “Winner of Tie”, “Team to Lift the Trophy” or “Outright Winner”. An outright market concerns the winner of a competition rather than the result of one match.

Qualification and trophy markets may use the eventual outcome, including extra time and a shootout, where their rules specify this. “Including extra time” alone does not necessarily include shootout goals.

For example, Team A can draw after 90 minutes but qualify after extra time. A 90-minute 1X2 bet on Team A would lose, while a Team A to Qualify bet could win under its stated conditions. These are different markets, not different interpretations of the same bet.

How penalties are settled

A penalty during play is not the same as a penalty shootout. A scored penalty during normal time is a match goal. A scored penalty during extra time counts only for markets covering that period.

A penalty shootout is a separate procedure used to decide some drawn ties. Under standard penalty shootout betting rules:

  • Shootout results do not change the settlement of 90-minute markets.
  • Shootout goals normally do not count towards Total Goals or player goals markets.
  • The shootout winner may determine qualification, trophy or outright bets where the rules include that outcome.

Dedicated shootout markets follow their own conditions. Check those conditions rather than applying normal match-goal rules.

Cancelled, postponed and abandoned matches

A cancelled match will not take place as scheduled. A postponed match is moved to a later time. An abandoned match starts but stops before completion. Their treatment depends on the published interruption policy, the market and whether its outcome was already conclusively determined.

Applicable completion deadline: [Compliance review required: insert Mela Bet’s approved postponement and resumption deadline, including the time zone and any competition-specific exceptions.] Do not assume a 24-, 48- or 72-hour rule applies unless it is published.

  • Cancelled before kick-off: bets may be void with the stake returned, subject to the applicable cancellation rules.
  • Postponed before kick-off: bets may remain valid if the match takes place within the permitted period; otherwise, the published voiding policy applies.
  • Abandoned after kick-off: unresolved markets may be void. Markets already conclusively decided may stand if the rules allow it.
  • Resumed later: check whether bets carry over to the resumed match and whether the completion deadline is met. A replay from the start may be treated differently.
  • Official result changed later: settlement or resettlement follows the result-correction provisions, not an automatic refund rule.
  • Wrong date, team or market: an event-listing error requires review under the error provisions. Do not assume that every error makes a bet valid or void.

A void selection in an accumulator does not necessarily cancel the whole bet. Check the multiple-bet rules for the effect on the remaining selections and return.

Live football betting settlement

Live football betting rules apply while a match is in progress. Prices can change quickly, and a submitted bet may face an acceptance delay. Submission alone does not mean the bet has been accepted.

A goal, red card, penalty, dangerous attack or VAR review may cause a football odds change or market suspension, meaning betting is temporarily unavailable. A pending request may be rejected or require confirmation at updated odds. Check its final status before submitting another bet.

Scores, clocks and broadcasts may be delayed or incomplete. Settlement depends on confirmed event data under the applicable rules, not solely on the display seen when betting. In Mela Bet live, check whether a market covers the whole match, a specific period or only events after acceptance.

Odds changes and bet confirmation

Odds are the price used to calculate a potential return. The accepted price is shown in the confirmed bet record, subject to any applicable error provisions. A price displayed before acceptance is not a confirmed price.

If odds change before acceptance, the system may offer a new price or reject the request, depending on the bet-slip settings and rules. Review the selection, stake, time period and odds before confirming, especially during live football.

For technical faults, incorrect prices or duplicate requests, check the recorded bet status and applicable error policy. A screen message or account deduction alone should not be used to infer the final settlement outcome.

VAR, official data and result corrections

VAR, the Video Assistant Referee system, can lead to goals being disallowed, penalties being awarded or disciplinary decisions being reviewed. Markets may remain suspended while a decision or official data is being confirmed.

A provisional goal or card does not necessarily count for settlement. Mela Bet’s designated data sources and published rules determine which confirmed events apply.

If an official result or event record changes after settlement, any correction must follow the Terms and Conditions, including applicable review limits and error provisions. A later disciplinary ruling does not automatically change every settled market.

Player, cards and corners markets

  • Cards: check whether the market counts cards to players on the pitch, substitutes, bench staff or coaches. The treatment of second yellow cards, straight red cards and cards after the final whistle also depends on the rules.
  • Corners: check whether settlement requires a corner to be officially awarded and taken. An awarded but untaken corner, or a retaken corner, must be treated according to the market definition.
  • Player participation: a bet may be void if the player does not take part, but starting, substitute and minimum-participation conditions can differ.
  • Player goals: own goals normally do not count as goals scored by that player for goalscorer markets, unless the rules state otherwise.

Check the specific market rules before placing a bet. Do not assume that goalscorer, player statistics and match totals markets share identical conditions.

Examples of football bet settlement

Scenario Settlement
The score is 1–1 after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Team A wins in extra time. A 90-minute 1X2 bet on Team A loses. The covered period ended in a draw.
The match is 0–0 after normal time. Team B later wins a shootout. A 90-minute Total Goals Over 0.5 bet loses. Shootout goals are excluded.
A match is cancelled before kick-off. The bet is void with the single-bet stake returned if the applicable cancellation rule requires this.
A live bet is submitted during a VAR review. It may remain pending, require updated-odds confirmation or be rejected. Check the accepted bet record.
Team A advances after a penalty shootout. A Team A to Qualify bet wins if its rules include the shootout outcome.

Responsible football betting

Football betting should be entertainment, not a source of income. Only stake money you can afford to lose, and do not increase stakes to recover losses. Check available limits, breaks, self-exclusion options and support through Responsible Gaming.

Betting is for eligible adults only. Read the Age Restriction Policy for age and verification requirements.
